ABOUT ARTIST

Jing Tan
was born in Guangdong, China in 1992. She graduated from Royal College of Art in 2017. Jing is keen on experimenting with textures, materials, and form within sculpture and installation. Her practice combines her expertise in the unpredictable composition of materials and techniques, with her whimsical intertwist of elements from biology and folklore. She often creates scenarios of the surreal striking the viewer aesthetically and psychologically, aiming to make visible and sensible the trauma and solitude of individuals in society, along with the object and space respectively.

Jing has been experimenting with recreating new versions of a story, by dint of the formation of speculative relations among personal experiences, folklores and historical trajectories, from imagined spaces navigated by flowing and straying experiential empathy.

Through the drawing of storylines' anfractuosity and the combing of nonlinear contexts, Jing playfully mingles more sidelines into chaos, where she is exploring the possibilities of breaking dualism.

Snail Fairy is a research project based on Chinese folklore Snail Maiden. The project would be presented by performative talks/workshops that invite children and adults separately, to discourse the plots and characters in Snail Maiden from different contexts, in order to discuss the fluidity of the roles we playing in society and break through the binary viewpoints in discussion upon gender roles. Through the adaption/rewriting, despite the possible and obvious deviations from the original story of these newly constructed versions, this project aims to explore the interaction between ideology and folklore (mythology), as well as the thinking space derived from such interaction.
